Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the leading city gas operator in the country, is gearing up to establish 19 compressed biogas plants across four states, marking a significant expansion beyond its natural gas operations towards cleaner energy sources.
The company has entered into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreements with two technology partners to develop these compressed biogas plants in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, announced during the India Energy Week 2024 event.
The biogas produced from municipal and agricultural waste will be blended with conventional gas and supplied as CNG for automobiles and piped gas for cooking and industrial purposes.
Furthermore, IGL has already enlisted two additional partners for similar initiatives, with the biogas from these plants planned to be integrated into IGL’s city gas distribution network.
IGL, known for its retail of CNG and piped natural gas in the national capital and surrounding areas, is aligning with India’s efforts to explore alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on imported fuels and improve air quality.
In line with government mandates, which require blending of Compressed BioGas (CBG) with natural gas, IGL’s initiative aims to contribute towards promoting the production and consumption of compressed biogas. This move is anticipated to result in the establishment of 750 compressed biogas projects nationwide by 2028-29.
The MoUs, signed in the presence of IGL officials including Managing Director K K Chatiwal and Director (Commercial) Pawan Kumar, are poised to generate 0.45 million standard cubic meters per day of biogas from waste, approximately 5% of IGL’s daily requirements.
These agreements are expected to benefit various stakeholders, including municipal authorities, City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities, farmers, and the public. Municipalities will alleviate waste management challenges, farmers can manage agricultural waste, CGD entities will access affordable gas, and the public will enjoy a cleaner environment.
