On Thursday, the United States approved the sale of 31 MQ-9B armed drones to India at an estimated cost of USD 3.99 billion. This acquisition will enhance India’s capabilities to address current and future threats by enabling unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance patrols in sea lanes of operation. The mega drone deal was announced during the historic State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the State Department has determined and approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of India, including MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft and related equipment. The proposed sale aligns with the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States, strengthening the strategic relationship with India and enhancing the security of a major defense partner. India’s role as a force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region is emphasized.

The sale aims to improve India’s capability for unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance patrols in sea lanes of operation, particularly along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. The deal includes 31 High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, with the Navy receiving 15 SeaGuardian drones and the Army and Indian Air Force each receiving eight land version SkyGuardian drones. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency highlighted India’s commitment to modernizing its military and expressed confidence that the country would effectively integrate these assets into its armed forces.

The DSCA emphasized that the proposed sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region and would not adversely impact US defense readiness. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems is identified as the principal contractor. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller mentioned ongoing consultations with Congress on the arms transfer process, underscoring the important role Congress plays in such transactions. The formal notification to Congress was expected, but no specific timeline was provided.
